Southeast Alaska King Salmon Troll fishery lawsuit

The 9th Circuit is set to hear oral arguments on a lawsuit concerning the Southeast king salmon troll fishery. The appeal challenges a lower court ruling that threatened to shut down the fishery due to violations of endangered species and environmental laws by NOAA Fisheries. The ruling found that allowing Southeast trollers to harvest king salmon at harmful rates was detrimental to endangered killer whales in Puget Sound and king salmon populations from the lower Columbia River. A stay issued by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in June 2023 has kept the fishery open temporarily. The Wild Fish Conservancy initiated the lawsuit, arguing that the trollers are impacting salmon vital to Puget Sound killer whales. The court hearing will involve arguments from various parties, including the State of Alaska and the Alaska Trollers Association, as well as the Wild Fish Conservancy.
