Alaskan Fishing News

A recent genetic study using whole genome sequencing has confirmed panmixia in North Pacific sablefish, meaning they migrate and mix throughout their range to form a single genetic population. This research enhances understanding of sablefish population structure from Washington State to Alaska, providing valuable information for sustainable management strategies.

The findings support the conclusion that Alaska sablefish is one stock and provide evidence of their incredible migratory abilities, with some fish potentially traveling from San Diego to Alaska's Aleutian Islands. Whole genome sequencing identified millions of genetic markers, revealing no evidence of population structure in 119 individuals sampled across the northern range of the species.

This study demonstrates the potential of whole genome sequencing for investigating population structure in species with high migration rates.
